Well, today has been horrible. I ate some baby carrots yesterday while I was out birding and ended up with food poisoning. Oh, joy! So in addition to the pinched nerve in my right arm, I was vomiting most of the night, and my allergies decided to make an appearance, too. Since I couldn’t keep anything down, I couldn’t take pain relievers (even though they work poorly anyway) and antihistamines, so I was miserable in the extreme. And because I have neither medical insurance nor friends in NYC, I had the distinct displeasure of suffering without any relief in sight. Alone. I don’t recommend it. I have no idea why all these things are happening now, when I’ve had four years of unemployment for them to happen, when they all could be spaced apart so I could deal with each one as it came appreciate the special misery that each one generates, instead of having everything dogpile on top of me at the same time.

About GrrlScientist

grrlscientist is the pseudonym of an evolutionary biologist and ornithologist who writes about evolution, ethology, and ecology, especially in birds. After earning a degree in microbiology (thesis focus: virology) and working at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, she earned her PhD in zoology from the University of Washington in Seattle, where she studied the molecular correlates of testosterone and behaviour in white-crowned sparrows. She then worked a Chapman Postdoctoral Fellow at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, where she studied the speciation and distribution of lories and other parrots throughout the South Pacific Islands. A discarded scientist, she returned to her roots: writing. Formerly hosted by The Guardian (UK), she now writes about science for Forbes and for the non-profit think tank, the Evolution Institute and she writes podcasts for BirdNote Radio. An avid lifelong birder and aviculturist, she lives with a flock of songbirds and parrots somewhere in Germany.

Oh dear. What foul crime did you commit towards vegetables in a past life, that the baby carrots want their revenge now?
Look after yourself. Hopefully all the pain will be balanced out when you get to London.
Aside from the effects of the hangovers, of course.

An alternative for a happy end of the cartoon.

Aww… I was supposed to be in NYC by… right about now, actually. Will be there tomorrow, if there is anything I can do.

Hang in there. That you are still conscious and able to write means that you are going to be OK once it passes. The misery of the food poisoning is probably making the other things feel that much worse. But, it will pass, you will get better and you will be able to go on your trip to London. One thing I know that does help is to not be cooped up in inside all day, get out and breath some (relatively speaking) fresh air even if just for a few moments. In the meantime, make sure and take in as much fluid as you can and otherwise, take it real easy.

Food poisoning from baby carrots, strange and worrying.
Could expect it from the adult carrots, but the baby ones!
    Hope you feel better soon.
